How much do you need to spend on SEO in 2026?
In 2026, plan to spend about $30–$140 per month on SEO software, or roughly $130–$540 per month with light consultant guidance. Google recommends reviewing changes after a few weeks and says some site-wide effects can take several months, so budget for months of audit, implementation, and monitoring. In oohoom, you can save money and time by giving repetitive research, analysis, implementation, and monitoring work to an AI agent, and using a human consultant for strategy and important decisions.
Why SEO results can take weeks or months
You see a monthly cost of something like Semrush and think "I can afford one month of that".
First, Google has to notice the page. According to Google's recrawl guidance, crawling can take a few days to a few weeks. A crawl request does not guarantee indexing or visibility in search results.
Google then has to compare the change with competing results. Google's Search Console guidance says some changes can affect Search in a few days, while others can take several months. It advises waiting a few weeks before evaluating a change. Rankings and revenue are not guaranteed.
Google's core update guidance says it can take several months for its systems to learn and confirm site-wide improvements.
Google does not give every site a fixed measurement deadline. Review crawl and index status first, then look for changes in query coverage, impressions, positions, engagement, and conversions. For traffic analysis, Google's Search Console guidance suggests comparing the last three months with the previous period or the same period last year. This reporting option does not mean an SEO change will work within three months. You should continue spending until results come in.
Nowadays, Google is not the only player. Did you know that when user asks ChatGPT a question, most of the time it searches in Bing instead of Google? So, you should measure your performance on both Google and Bing. If you want AI models to recommend your website/brand from their own knowledge base, wait for the next version of ChatGPT/Claude...
That changes the budget question. You are not buying a dashboard for 30 days. You are funding this repeated workflow for as long as you run the business:
- Find the opportunity or problem
- Analyze everything
- Find out the changes you should make
- Implement the changes
- Wait for search engines, AI models, and users to notice
- Compare the result and go to the 1st step...
Monthly SEO software costs
These starting plans are not direct feature-for-feature matches. Some are paid monthly. Others show a lower monthly price but charge for a full year up front.
- Semrush SEO : $139 month to month, or $117.33/month billed annually. The annual commitment is $1,407.96 upfront.
- Ahrefs Lite : from $129/month in USD, before extra users or usage.
- Surfer Discovery : $49/month billed yearly, so the advertised starting rate is a $588 annual commitment, not a month-to-month subscription.
- SEO Gets Core : $39/month. Its free tier covers GSC but not GA4, MCP access, scheduled reports, or AI credits.
- LowFruits Standard : $29.90/month or $20.75/month billed yearly. The annual option is $249 upfront, with credit limits for SERP extraction.
Prices were checked on August 2, 2026 and can change. The starting tiers in different products solve different problems. Surfer focuses on content optimization, while LowFruits focuses on keyword opportunities. Starting tiers also limit AI features.
Consultant costs
Consultants may charge hourly, by project, or on a monthly retainer. In Backlinko's survey of more than 300 SEO professionals, updated December 29, 2025 for its 2026 pricing guide, consultant rates were usually $50–$100 per hour. This is a medium rate. Location, experience, specialization, site size, and scope can change the price.
For a small site that needs review and prioritization, we assume two to four consultant hours per month. The calculation is 2–4 hours × $50–$100/hour = $100–$400 per month
For ongoing service, the same survey reports an average monthly SEO cost of $1,000–$2,500, before software. Ask what the fee includes. Audit, a long-term strategy plan, meetings, implementation, content writing, developer support, reporting, and follow-up are different scopes. Also ask who owns the subscriptions and who pays for extra seats, credits, and taxes.
A consultant may spend those hours exporting data, checking dozens of dashboards and pages, creating spreadsheets, or assembling PDF reports. Keep reading! I'll show you how you can save hours and money.
The final billing!
For realistic budgeting, separate these line items:
- Platform access: The subscription or annual commitment + extra seats for experts
- Metered usage: AI generations, SERP lookups, crawl credits, tracked AI prompts, or other plan-specific units. These units are not directly comparable across products, so check the included allowance, reset period, and extra usage prices.
- Consultation: Hours of consultation including research, audits, reports, planning, prioritization, etc
- Implementation: Content writing, development, etc
A consultant or content writer may need access to the SEO suite you use. Semrush lists extra users from $45/month, while Ahrefs charges for added users by plan. If consultant uses their own SEO suite subscription, you and your content team will be left blind if they don't communicate well with you.
How to reduce your SEO costs with oohoom
You do not need a consultant for every keyword lookup, page check, or weekly report. Ask the oohoom AI agent to handle routine SEO tasks such as:
- Research: Wanna write a new post? Find keyword ideas, review keyword performance history, check Google and Bing results in bulk, inspect competitors, and check AI-answer visibility and citation sources.
- Performance analysis: Ask the agent to analyze GSC, GA4, and Bing data, compare periods, connect queries and landing pages to sessions, conversions, and revenue, and visualize the result.
- Actions: It recommends you next actions, or drafts a new post and, when you connect a compatible CMS or site tool, applies the requested change through the same chat (no copy-paste anymore).
- Monitoring and reports: Schedule recurring reports or actions, email the result, and tune it for your desired signals.
- Follow-up: Save the agreed SEO plan, to-do list, and repeat the analysis later, and measure whether the change helped.
The agent collects the data, explains the evidence, and recommends (and implements) actions. This saves time and reduces the repetitive work you need to buy from an expert. Metered AI usage is much more affordable (especially when using a cost-effective AI model) than a consultant hourly rate.
When you invite an expert to a chat in oohoom, you choose the GSC site, GA4 property, or Bing site available to that chat. The expert works on the same selected data instead of asking you to buy another seat, send spreadsheet exports, or share a broad account access (GSC, GA4, Bing, etc). That makes access easier to understand and easier to limit.
The pricing? $99/year for platform access. AI usage at the provider's price (AI tokens) without any extra charge or confusing words like "usage credits" other SEO tools use. Consultation? The verified experts in oohoom set their service tiers, we get no extra fee.
Try it with $5 credit and 30 days of platform access at oohoom.com. No card required.
